Fitness and Social Media
How digital tools can help achieve fitness goals
Presented by the Social Media Club Sacramento
Tuesday, January 18
The month of January and setting New Year’s resolutions go together like peas and carrots (Resolution reminder: Eat more veggies!). Vowing to exercise more, stay away from sweets and lose weight are often at the top of the resolution list. The problem usually isn’t setting healthy goals. It’s sticking to them!
Fortunately for our waist lines, the fitness industry has embraced social media and professionals are using a number of digital tools to motivate their clients in and out of the gym. The social element of fitness has always been present, but now more than ever, virtual tools like Facebook, Twitter and specialized websites are making fitness fun and interactive.
When used right, social media can help us track what we eat, report to a trainer, learn about the next Zumba-like craze, and find others with the same goals. However, with more than 800 health and fitness apps on the iTunes market, it can be daunting to find the right fit.
Fitness experts and weekend warriors alike are invited to join the Sacramento Social Media Club and our panel of local fitness and nutrition experts for this free event* to learn about the latest trends in social media and fitness and the best digital tools to motivate, and stay on track.
Topics include:
- How to get motivated (or keep momentum) through social media
- How social media acts as a "community" for people with similar goals
- A review of the hottest (sometimes FREE) apps that can aid in reaching fitness and nutrition goals
- Best Facebook pages, Twitter feeds and blogs for people who seek advice on exercise and nutrition
Panelists:
- Mallory Arcuri, Marketing Coordinator, California Family Fitness, @CalFit Facebook
- Lorri Ann Code, Founder/Owner, Mama Bootcamp, @mamabootcamp Facebook

Panelists Bios:
Mallory Arcuri joined California Family Fitness in February 2005 when the Roseville club first opened. Her hard work and motivation quickly led her to an assistant management position for the company where she supported three different clubs. Arcuri’s passion for the industry and experience in the fitness centers led her to the marketing coordinator position where she assists with execution of marketing and promotions. Arcuri continues to enhance all California Family Fitness social networking channels through promotion of programs and cutting edge information on fitness and nutrition.
Lorri Ann Code is a master trainer, certified life purpose coach, and motivational speaker. She is well known in the fitness industry for designing and implementing bootcamps for women throughout the Northern California region, and has been motivating people through health and fitness for more than 30 years. A few of Code's many credentials include: American Council on Exercise (ACE), Life Purpose Institute for Life Coaching, and Powerhouse Pilates Mat 1, Mat 11, and Reformer, Aerobics Fitness Association of America (AFAA) andApex FitPro for Weight Management and Nutrition Systems.
Tara Getty is a co-owner and fitness coach at Midtown Strength and Conditioning in the Southside Park neighborhood of Sacramento. Midtown Strength and Conditioning is a non-commercial gym specializing in “traditional” methods of achieving strength---the gym has no mirrors, no machines and no attitude. A graduate of Cal Poly State University, SLO, Getty brings practical business skills to the gym and the clients she coaches. Her style is no-nonsense and she goes to great lengths to help everyone reach his/her fitness goals. She constantly e-mails, texts and calls her clients to keep them on track.
Gina Garcia discovered yoga more than 12 years ago, when a scheduled step aerobics class was switched to a beginning yoga class. Garcia's wish is to share yoga with as many people as possible. Not long after giving birth to her third son, she decided to choose a path that would allow her to bring more grace to her family life, and to those she crosses paths with every day. Garcia is a certified Baron Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga Teacher, and continues to train with Baron. During the spring, summer and early fall months, every Saturday morning you can find her behind the McKinley Park Rose garden here in Sacramento, teaching free power vinyasa yoga classes to hundreds of students. She created "Yoga in the Park"in the spring of 2009, and teaches weekly classes in Oak Park.
Curtis Schurkamp has been wrestling competitively since he was four years old. With years of crash dieting and poor nutrition, Schurkamp was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in his mid 2006 season. He stopped wrestling for a year and focused on his education at San Francisco State University where he studied nutrition. He became motivated and found out how to manage his diabetes. Now able to control his diabetes, Schurkamp gave wrestling another shot and became a 2X NCAA All-American and earned his Nutrition & Food Management degree. As a Certified Kids Nutrition Specialist and Certified Lifestyle & Weight Management Specialist, Schurkamp helped create EatLikeaChamp.com to advocate the importance of eating healthy. Through the use of social media, Schurkamp focuses on motivation and creating healthy lifestyle changes for his clients to pursue their goals.
This event will stream live on Ustream at www.ustream.tv/user/smc-sac starting at 7 p.m.
*Since our very first event in April of 2009 Sacramento Social Media Club has proudly provided the community with FREE panels and workshops. We've tried to bring you cutting edge topics, knowledgeable speakers, and great food and drinks. We've been able to do all this for free thanks to generous sponsors and individuals. But, as we grow, we need your help. At this event, we're asking for a very small $10 donation at the door to help us cover costs.
